FC Kansas City / Houston Dash / National Women's Soccer League

Dash own goal forces draw with Kansas City

In front of a sold-out crowd at Swope Soccer Village, FC Kansas City drew the visiting Houston Dash, 1-1 . The Dash’s offense came from United States national team star Carli Lloyd just moments before halftime after forward Camila was fouled in a dangerous spot in the attacking third. Lloyd sent a low, bouncing ball toward the far post that slid just under Blues goalkeeper Nicole Barnhart.

Less than 10 minutes after returning for the second half, FC Kansas City found an equalizer thanks to a Dash own goal.

After receiving the ball at the edge of the 18, Heather O’Reilly sent in a low pass toward fellow national teammate Lauren Holiday. A sliding Toni Pressley attempted to block the ball from reaching Holiday, but instead ended up skimming the ball into the roof of her own net.

The match was the first one back for World Cup champions Becky Sauerbrunn, Amy Rodriguez, Morgan Brian, Meghan Klingenberg, Lloyd, O’Reilly and Holiday, who were honored before the match.

Throughout the first half, the Blues were outplaying the Dash after finding success with Heather O’Reilly burning up and down the right flank.

The first real chance of the game came in the 29th minute, when O’Reilly sent a ball into the box where Rodriguez was waiting. From just a few yards out, Rodriguez’s header was denied by the inside of the crossbar, keeping the scoreless line intact.

The home team continued to show superior bouts of possession and skill, but it was the visitors that ultimately struck first.

Throughout the second half, O’Reilly continued to dominate.

After the game tied on the own goal, both teams began pushing for an important game-winner and the visitors nearly found one in stoppage time. On a corner taken by Melissa Henderson, Jessica McDonald got a foot on the ball but her shot was saved off the line by the Blues. The ball then fell to Brian, who was stripped by Rodriguez, preventing the Dash from finding a game-winning goal.

Sharing points keeps the Dash and Blues in the same league positions (sixth and fourth respectively) they were at prior to the match.
