Simon guides Australia to first-ever knockout stage win

A goal by substitute Kyah Simon propelled Australia to its first knockout win as a country at the World Cup, as the Australians defeated Brazil, 1-0, at Moncton Stadium Sunday afternoon.

Entering in the 64th minute after the Australians had controlled Brazil for the majority of the opening half, Simon made the most of her limited field time to score her third goal of the tournament.

With the Brazilians on their heels, Katrina Gorry, who also came on in the second half, forced a  steal and slipped a pass through to a sprinting Lisa De Vanna. The 30-year-old captain chased down the ball inside the 18-yard-box and put a left-footed shot at the Brazilian goal. Veteran goalkeeper Luciana made the initial save to her right but lost the ball bringing it into her chest. That provided the opportunity for Simon’s glory as she smashed the ball inside the far post.

The goal for Australia was only their second shot on goal for the game, as the second half saw Brazil turn up the pressure looking for a goal. By the final whistle, Brazil had posted 14 shots with six shots on net, including a potential go-ahead goal moments before the winning goal for Australia. Forward Cristiane received a ball from veteran Formiga just outside the box and delivered a shot toward Lydia Williams but was stopped.

The loss for Brazil was deflating as it leaves Canada having allowed only Simon’s goal. After establishing a residency program in order to prepare the team for this year’s World Cup and next year’s Olympics – hosted by Brazil – the result wasn’t what the young team or captain Marta had hoped for.

The victory is a historic win not only for the Matildas, but the entire country as it was their first knockout victory – men’s or women’s – at any World Cup. Australia will face Japan at Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton on Saturday at 4 p.m. ET on Fox.
