Group C / Women's World Cup

Group C: Japan slips past Swiss, Cameroon rolls past Ecuador

Reigning World Cup champions Japan narrowly beat World Cup debutantes Switzerland in the second match in Group C play.

Switzerland goalkeeper Gaelle Thalmann collided with Japanese midfielder Kozue Ando in the 29th minute. Ando drew a yellow card and the decisive penalty kick.

Captain Aya Miyama calmly slotted the ball to the far left post, beating Thalmann. It was the second time this World Cup that the lone goal has been a penalty kick.

Switzerland tested Japan in the second half as the Swiss  Ramona Bachmann had four shots in the game, but only one was on goal among several narrow misses. Her best chancecame just after halftime when the 24-year-old weaved through several Japanese defenders but slipped after saving the ball on the endline.

Substitute Yuika Sugasawa’s smacked one of her two shots off the post in the 68th minute. Sugawasaw came on three minutes after the penalty kick to replace Ando, who was forced out of the match

Switzerland and Japan both played a calm, possession-based style and created plenty of opportunities, but Miyama’s first half penalty kick remained the only goal of the match.
