Houston Dash / National Women's Soccer League / Portland Thorns FC

Dash, Thorns play to scoreless draw

For the second time in three matches, the Houston Dash and Portland Thorns FC squared off this time in Houston at BBVA Compass Stadium. But for the first time in the series’ short existence, neither side was able to collect the three points with Portland (2-3-3, 9 points) unable to find the back of the net for a 0-0 draw.

The Dash (2-2-4, 10 points) extends their now franchise-best unbeaten streak to four collecting four out of a possible six points against the Thorns in regular season play.

A draw seemed unlikely considering Portland’s 15-5 shot advantage but the Thorns were unable to capitalize despite a game-high seven shots from forward Ayo Anonma.

Anonma’s first chance came in the 27th minute where after tip-toeing behind the Dash’s defense was one-on-one with goalkeeper Bianca Henninger, but her shot curled past the far post. The Equatorial Guinea signing found herself in a similar spot in the 80th minute but again her shot went wide of the goal.

Houston’s best opportunity to break the deadlock came in the 54th minute after forward Melissa Henderson was brought down in the box by Thorns defender Emily Menges.  This time it was Kealia Ohai who stepped up to take the penalty kick, but like Jessica McDonald last week against Sky Blue FC, the forward’s shot was saved by goalkeeper Michelle Betos.

The Dash managed very little in the offensive third after that, recording just one second half shot. However, the point keeps Houston one point ahead of Portland in the NWSL standings while the Thorns are now winless in their last six.

Next up: Portland hosts FC Kansas City June 19 following the league’s break during the Women’s World Cup group stage matches. Kickoff is slated for 10 p.m. ET.  Houston returns to host the Western New York Flash on June 20.
