Mewis chips in stoppage-time winner for Breakers

Kristie Mewis broke through in the final minute of stoppage time to propel the Boston Breakers to a 1-0 victory over the Portland Thorns at Soldiers Field Soccer Stadium in Boston.

Thorns goalkeeper Michelle Betos headed a ball outside the 18-yard-box but the rebound fell to Mewis. Mewis, who had several chances throughout the match, looped a chip from the edge of the box over Betos. The goal marked the 24-year-old’s first of the season.

For the first time this season Paul Riley’s club was unable to find its way on the scoreboard, pitted against a tough Breakers backline. Allie Long and Mana Shim were neutralized by Boston center backs Kassey Kallman and Julie King. Long was poised to attack often but found herself offside numerous times. Her best chance of the match came in the 72nd minute when her strike from distance sailed over the bar.

The victory was the first NWSL shutout for Breakers goalkeeper Jami Kranich. The Villanova product made her second start after Alyssa Naeher’s departure for World Cup preparation for the U.S.

Genoveva Anonma made her first NWSL start at forward for Portland. The Equatorial Guinea striker fired a shot in the 50th minute from just outside the 18-yard box but Kranich countered with a diving stop. Breakers defender Lauren Lazo also made her first professional start at outside back since signing with the club on Thursday.

NEXT UP:  The Breakers continue their three-game home stand against Sky Blue FC on May 22 at 7:00 p.m. ET. Portland looks to rebound at Providence Park against the Houston Dash on May 23 at 10:00 p.m ET.
