Despite dominating the match, the Western New York Flash fell to FC Kansas City, 1-0, as Liz Bogus scored the deciding goal. The goal for Bogus was her second goal of the season and helped the Blues earned their first-ever win at Sahlen’s Stadium in New York.
In the 73rd minute, with the match still scoreless, Blues midfielder Mandy Laddish sent the ball out wide to Bogus. Bogus beat Flash defender Jamia Fields and made her way into the box where she beat keeper Sabrina D’Angelo on the near post.
The Flash dominated throughout the game, having the majority of shots while employing a high-pressure system against the Blues. Most of the shots came from outside the 18-yard box and often failed to test Kansas City goalkeeper Nicole Barnhart as most shots went either over the crossbar or straight to keeper. Barnhart made eight saves in total with six coming in the opening half.
In the first few minutes of the match Western New York’s Kirsten Edmonds almost had the first goal for the Flash but it hit the crossbar.
In the 22nd and 29th minutes, Flash rookie Lynn Williams had shots, both directly to Barnhart. Like most of the Flash’s shots, they were both from distance as the Flash failed to get close to goal.
When they did get close to the net, the Flash failed to put away their opportunities. Sam Mewis sent a cross right in front of goal in the 18th minute, but no one was there for the Flash.
Sarah Hagen had an opportunity to get the visitors on the board in the 68th minute. Her shot from distance was cleared over the crossbar by D’Angelo.
NEXT UP: The teams will play the second leg of the home-and-home series Thursday when the Flash travel to Kansas City. The match kicks off at 8 p.m. ET at Swope Soccer Village.
