Boston Breakers / National Women's Soccer League / Western New York Flash

Becky Edwards leads Flash to first victory

In a match billed Mewis vs. Mewis, midfielder Becky Edwards stole the show with a goal and an assist in the Flash home opener. Younger sister Samantha Mewis will be heading home with bragging rights after scoring her first professional goal in the 22nd minute and Western New York defeated the Boston Breakers, 3-1, Saturday night at Sahlen Stadium in Rochester, N.Y.

Picked out inside the box, Mewis headed Edwards’ free kick past Alyssa Naeher to equalize 1-1.

Edwards then capitalized on a give and go with Lynn Williams to mount the Flash comeback. Edwards fired a pass to Williams who sent a return ball to an open Edwards inside the box. The midfielder ended the play with a great finish to put the Flash ahead, 2-1.

The Breakers took an early lead after opening the scoring in the 15th minute. Morgan Marlborough tapped in Stephanie McCaffrey’s cross for her first of the season.

Older sister Kristie Mewis nearly equalized in the 84th minute but her rousing strike was saved by Sabrina D’Angleo.

Sydney Leroux netted her first goal as a member of the Flash, to put Western New York ahead, 3-1, against her former cub. Leroux was sprung free one-on-one off a feed from Abby Dahlkemper. The U.S. national team forward cut back to her right foot around a defender and fired a strike to the bottom corner.

NEXT UP: The Western New York Flash will host FC Kansas City Friday, May 8 at 7 p.m. The Boston Breakers will look to rebound on the road against the undefeated  Chicago Red Stars on next Saturday at 7 p.m.
