Thorns mount comeback against Red Stars

Week 2 Player of the Week Christen Press continued her torrid start to the season with her second two goal performance, scoring a pair of goals in the opening eight minutes of the match. Portland was able to battle back to earn a point with a 2-2 draw, in front of 2,136 fans Saturday night at Village of Lisle-Benedictine University Sports Complex in Lisle, Ill.

Press opened the scoring in the 4th minute, blasting a shot from the top of the box into the top right corner and past Nadine Angerer. Four minutes later, Press received a pass from Vanessa DiBernardo and her deflected strike found its way into the back of the net.

Despite Chicago’s quick start the club was unable to hang on to their tw0-goal lead and the Thorns bounced back from the deficit.

Midfielder Mana Shim leveled the match for Portland in the 47th minute. Shim capitalized on Allie Long’s deflected shot and placed a strike of her own from the edge of the box inside the right post.

Sinead Farrelly nearly put the Thorns ahead in the 74th minute, after her shot from 20 yards out struck beat Karina LeBlanc but struck the crossbar.

Christine Sinclair got on the board in her first match of the season for Portland. The forward tucked Long’s feed inside the post in the 29th minute. Sinclair missed the club’s first two matches due to international duty for Canada. Another notable appearance for the Thorns was amateur player Taylor Comeau in Paul Riley’s starting XI.

Defensive cornerstone Rachel Van Hollebeke missed the match due to a hamstring strain and U.S. National Team forward Alex Morgan missed her second straight match due to a left knee contusion.

The draw marked the fifth straight tie between both clubs. Look for one of them to gain the upper hand when they matchup again on Sunday August 9th.

NEXT UP:  The Red Stars continue their four-game homestead against Sky Blue FC. While the Thorns are headed home to face the Washington Spirit next Saturday at Providence Park.
