PREVIEW: Portland Thorns at Chicago Red Stars

Reigning NWSL Player of the Week Christen Press will look to continue Chicago’s strong start to the season at home against the Portland Thorns.

Press scored a brace and earned an assist for a 3-2 win in the Red Stars home opener against rival Seattle Reign FC. She scored the game-winning goal in second-half stoppage time to put her team ahead.

Meanwhile the Thorns are also unbeaten and currently sit atop the NWSL standings after a 2-0 start to the season. Allie Long has had a hot start to 2015, scoring three goals including the lone goal last week in Portland’s 1-0 victory against Seattle Reign FC.

The last four matches between the clubs have ended in draws dating back to June 1, 2013 when the Red Stars came away with a 2-0 victory behind goals from Zakiya Bywaters and Jackie Santacaterina. Portland also owns a single victory in the all-time series, with that match ending 2-0 on May 12, 2013. Alex Morgan and Allie Long scored for the Thorns in that match. Of the four goal scorers in the victories, only Long will be available for her club.

Canadians Karina LeBlanc (CHI) and Christine Sinclair (POR) will also be available after making the trip from Canada’s national team camp in Vancouver.

Injury Report:

The Portland Thorns are nursing injuries to key players heading into tonight’s match. U.S. National Team forward Alex Morgan will miss her second game of the season due to a left knee contusion. Jodie Taylor is also out after suffering a right knee contusion. Defenders Kat Williamson (c0ncussion) and Rachel Van Hollebeke (hamstring strain) are probable.

For Rory Dames’ club,  Alyssa Mautz is also out with a left ankle sprain. Canadian international Rachel Quon is probable.
