Rodriguez lifts Kansas City to first win of season

In a rematch of last year’s NWSL championship match, Amy Rodriguez was, once again, the difference between the two clubs.

After a first half of half-chances, missed opportunities and the occasional crossbar, FC Kansas City came into the second half looking to earn its first points of the 2015 season. Three minutes after the teams headed to the locker room scoreless, Rodriguez got her club on the board. Sarah Hagen slotted a ball through the center of the Reign defense and the U.S. forward was able to outrun her defender and chipped a shot past Hope Solo.

Megan Rapinoe, who scored the lone goal for Seattle in a 2-1 loss in the title match, had the best chance to equalize for the Reign when she smacked a volley on target from the top of the box. Nicole Barnhart was able to parry the shot out for a corner kick to preserve the lead in the 75th minute.

The two clubs traded shots off the frame work during the opening half. Rapinoe had a corner kick skim of the crossbar in the early moments of the match.

Rodriguez and Holiday hoped to get their side on the board before the whistle blew for halftime. Holiday hit a cross on the left side of the box that Rodriguez was able to get to a the near post and struck a shot off the bounce. Her shot also found the crossbar.

Beverly Yanez and Kim Little looked to combine just before the half hour mark when Little got free on the left side and put a pass across the face of goal. Yanez was unable to get a touch on it and the ball rolled out for a goal kick.

It was the last match that head coaches Laura Harvey and Vlakto Andonovski will have their U.S. internationals before they report to national team camp next weekend.
