After netting a brace in a 4-1 victory over the Boston Breakers last weekend, Allie Long scored the lone goal in the Portland Thorns’ 1-0 victory over the Western New York Flash.
In the 22nd minute, midfielder Sinead Farrelly sent a long ball into the box with Long making her run in. Flash goalkeeper Sabrina D’Angelo came way off her line in attempt to punch the ball away, but Long got to the ball first and her header sailed right over D’Angelo into the net.
Though the Flash, who suffered a 5-1 thrashing against the Seattle Reign last weekend, failed to put away chances tonight, the team looked much more cohesive and continued to press until the final whistle.
Another positive for Thorns fans was that the 13,148 in attendance were able to catch a glimpse of fan-favorite Christine Sinclair tonight in her first appearance for the team this season when she stepped on the field in the 69th minute. The club will be without the Canadian international for a majority of the season, so having players like Long, Farrelly and Meleana Shim combine for goals early on this season will undoubtedly benefit the team during the World Cup stretch.
With the win, the Thorns are now 2-0-0 with five goals scored. On the opposite end of the standings sit the Western New York Flash, who remain winless with a 0-2-0 record with a -5 goal difference.
Next up, the Thorns head to Chicago for the team’s first away match of the season on April 25. The Flash have a bye next week and won’t return to action until May 2, when the team hosts the Boston Breakers at Sahlen’s Stadium.
