Reign roll past Flash behind Rapinoe’s hat trick

Megan Rapinoe scored a hat trick and marked an assist as the Seattle Reign rolled past the Western New York Flash, 5-1, Sunday night.

Reign midfielder Jess Fishlock opened the scoring in the 25th minute off a volley from a Megan Rapinoe cross. The Welsh international hit the volley off her first touch past Flash rookie goalkeeper Sabrina D’Angelo.

Reign midfielder Kim Little had a chance to increase the lead in the 37th minute when Flash defender Brittany Taylor was called for a foul on Reign midfielder Keelin Winters in the box. Instead, the 2014 Golden Boot winner put pace on the ball but sent it wide.

Beverly Yanez increased the lead in the 53rd minute when the Reign forward slid the ball to the far post, beating D’Angelo. Little created the assist after running the ball into space from the midfield line.

In the 56th minute D’Angelo made two point-blank slaves off shots from Little and Merritt Mathias. The Canadian goalkeeper had several impressive saves despite the score line.

Jordan Angeli cut the Reign lead in half in the 68th minute when she beat Hope Solo to the near post, scoring her first professional goal in four years.

The Flash’s comeback didn’t last long and in the 70th minute Rapinoe powered a header past D’Angelo off an assist from Mathias. Rapinoe responded again in the 74th minute, scoring off another header at the back post from Little’s assist. The U.S. midfielder rounded out her hat trick 12 minutes later when she found the back of the net after a give-and-go with Fishlock.
