Sky Blue FC opened up its 2015 season with a 1-0 road win Sunday against FC Kansas City. Nadia Nadim got on the end of a Meg Morris cross just before the half hour mark to give the visitors the advantage and Brittany Cameron came up with several impressive stops to keep the Blues’ attack at bay.
The defending champs dominated the early part of the match with midfielders Erika Tymrak and Lauren Holiday getting open looks at goal, but Cameron was able to preserve the clean sheet. Tymrak took a pass from Holiday and fired a point blank shot on goal. Cameron got a hand on it to prevent Kansas City from taking the lead in the third minute. The Blues were at it again in the 20th minute when Holiday combined with Becky Sauerbrunn. Holiday’s shot on goal was parried away by Cameron.
Despite being outshot in the first half, 9-4, Sky Blue was able to nab the only goal of the match in the 29th minute. Morris gathered a loose ball and the top of the box and looped a ball over to a streaking Nadim on the right side of the box. The Danish international rifled a hard shot past Barnhart for the lead.
The possession balanced out in the second half after the Blues dominated first half possession and chances. Tymrak cracked a shot just over the crossbar at the hour mark and newly acquired Yael Averbuch sent a stoppage time free kick over the bar to close the match.
Next up: FC Kansas City travels to the Maryland SoccerPlex to take on the Washington Spirit on April 18 at 7 p.m. ET with both teams looking for their first win. Sky Blue FC will host the Houston Dash on April 18 at 7 p.m.
