#TBT: 2013 NWSL College draft

For 2015, we’ve decided to use the ever-popular “Throwback Thursday” to bring back a women’s soccer moment from old school Team USA to a memory from one of the three incarnations of women’s professional soccer in the U.S.

JANUARY 18, 2014:  Zakiya Bywaters is selected first at the 2013 NWSL College Draft

nameIn a draft where both Christine Nairn and Kristie Mewis were available, the Chicago Red Stars surprised a lot of people when they selected UCLA forward Zakiya Bywaters with the first overall selection.

Florida State forward Tiffany McCarty was selected second by Washington and Kristie Mewis rounded out the top-3 after being drafted by FC Kansas City.

The rest of the first round broke down like this:

 

  • Sky Blue FC – Lindsi Lisonbee-Cutshall (BYU)
  • Boston Breakers – Casey Short (FSU)
  • Western New York Flash – Adrianna Franch (Oklahoma State)
  • Seattle Reign FC – Christine Nairn (Penn State)
  • Portland Thorns FC – Kathryn Williamson (Florida)
