Kawasumi’s brace gives Seattle three more points

BOS at SEA

The storyline tonight at Memorial Stadium wasn’t foreign: the Seattle Reign conceded an early goal before coming from behind to keep the undefeated streak alive. Tonight, the last-place Boston Breakers were unfortunate to be on the losing end.

The match began with both teams showing great promise. One of Boston’s first chances came from midfielder Heather O’Reilly, whose strike forced Reign goalkeeper Hope Solo to make a diving save. O’Reilly’s teammate Lianne Sanderson made a great play into a crowded box, but her teammates could not finish the ball off.

On the other end of the field, Reign midfielder Jess Fishlock took a great shot from distance, but goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher kept the home team off the board. The visiting Breakers struck first, in the 19th minute, when Courtney Jones blasted a shot from outside the box that sailed just past Solo.

After emerging from halftime still down by a goal, Reign defender Stephanie Cox sent a cross into the box toward Naho Kawasumi. Kawasumi struck the ball fantastically from a tight angle to put the home team on the score sheet.

It took 21 minutes for another goal to come, but after a Breakers own goal from Brianca Sierra in the 76th minute, two goals–one from each team–came in at rapid-fire speed.

About two minutes after the Breakers scored an own goal, Katie Schoepfer (who was subbed on in the 61st minute) gave the Breakers an important equalizer. Schoepfer’s low drive to the far post was too much for Solo to get a hand on.

With the game winding down, the Reign continued to press for a third goal. In the 83rd minute, Fishlock played a brilliant nutmeg in the box before slipping the ball to Kawasumi, who put the ball into the back of the net for the second time tonight.

In the dying minutes of the match, Sanderson saw red after receiving her second yellow of the night for a tackle on Fishlock. With her red card, Sanderson is now ineligible for the next Breakers game on Friday evening against the Houston Dash at BBVA Compass Stadium.

The Reign next head to Chicago for a Saturday evening game against the Red Stars while the Breakers travel to Houston for a Friday contest.
