Sky Blue holds Seattle to scoreless draw

SBFC at Seattle

Three days after defeating the Portland Thorns at Providence Park, Sky Blue FC wrapped up its two-game west coast road trip picking up one more point in a scoreless draw against the undefeated Seattle Reign FC.

With some controversy surrounding Hope Solo’s arrest just one week ago, Haley Kopmeyer was given the opportunity to start between the posts for the Reign for the third time this season.

Kopmeyer bolstered her statistics by earning her second shutout of the season. The Michigan native previously shut out the Boston Breakers at Harvard Stadium on June 19 and in 270 minutes played, has only let in one goal.

Sky Blue’s Brittany Cameron, who has shared goalkeeping responsibilities with Jill Loyden, also earned her second shutout of the season. Like Kopmeyer, Cameron’s first of the season came against the Breakers. Having played in six matches, Cameron’s goals per game average is currently at 1.17, compared to Loyden’s 1.80.

In tonight’s match, neither goalkeeper faced too difficult a test, with chances lacking on both ends. A 59th minute header from Sydney Leroux was the first real chance for the home team, but Leroux was denied by the crossbar.

In a very uncharacteristic manner, the Reign looked underwhelming in front of one of the team’s largest home crowds. With the clock winding down, Jess Fishlock blasted a shot just outside the box that rattled the woodwork.

Both teams (who will not face each other again this season) will travel east for midweek matches on Wednesday evening. Sky Blue will host the Houston Dash before hosting FC Kansas City on Sunday. Following those two matches, the team will have a two-week rest period.

The Reign will face off against the Western New York Flash for the third, and final, time this season on Wednesday before heading back westward for a Sunday match against the Breakers.
