Seattle Reign FC / Western New York Flash

Seattle scores twice in five minutes to defeat Flash.

Seattle at WNY

After scoring a goal in stoppage time nearly a month ago for a draw, Seattle scored twice in the final seven minutes to defeat the Western New York Flash 2-1.

The tying goal came on a free kick from 35-yards out as Kim Little connected with Kate Deines on the far post in the 83rd minute. Little, who had been silenced for the majority of the game, earned the free kick after being fouled by Carli Lloyd.

With momentum on its side, Seattle found the winner from another player who returned from international duty. With time winding down, the Reign pushed up  the field and Jessica Fishlock froze the Flash backline. Fishlock volleyed over the defenders and connected with Sydney Leroux who chipped it over Western New York goalkeeper Lydia Williams and then tapped it in for the goal.

While the Reign earned the win, it was the Flash that controlled the majority of the game and scored the opening goal. Samantha Kerr found the back of the net in the 61st minute on the Flash’s second corner of the match. Vicky Losada served the ball in from the far side of the field and  found an unmarked Kerr on the far post.

Losada’s assist was her fifth of the season while Kerr notched her fifth goal and fourth in the last four games.

The first half saw both teams struggle to find a rhythm as the teams combined for three shots on goal. While the Flash only had one, it was nearly the game’s opening goal. After a turnover by Fishlock, Lloyd dribbled into the box and found Kerr who couldn’t get much power on the cross.

This game was the second thriller between the Reign and Flash. With Western New York leading in the final minute of the game in Seattle on May 25, Little found the equalizer in the final minute of stoppage time to earn a 2-2 draw.

The two teams will look to add to another chapter to their battles this season in 10 days when the Reign return to Sahlen’s Stadium. Before the rematch, Seattle will return to Memorial Stadium to host Sky Blue next Saturday. Western New York remains at home and will look to rebound against the Boston Breakers on Friday.
