After going down a goal an hour into the match, the Seattle Reign struck three times in 11 minutes to defeat the Chicago Red Stars at home.
In her first NWSL match of the season, Australian international Emily Van Egmond put the visitors up by a goal in the 63rd minute.
With the Reign clearing Vanessa DiBernardo’s initial corner kick, the Red Stars managed to win back the ball. DiBernardo sent in a cross to Michelle Wenino. Wenino’s header fell to Van Egmond, who flicked the ball past a diving Hope Solo.
Minutes later, Julie Johnston tackled Beverly Goebel from behind in the box and the ref immediately pointed to the penalty spot.
Stepping up for her fifth penalty of the season, Seattle’s Kim Little blasted the ball into the lower left corner of the goal. Goalkeeper Karina LeBlanc guessed the correct side, but couldn’t get a hand on the ball.
Little’s goal was her tenth of the season and within three minutes, teammate Sydney Leroux broke her scoring drought with a powerful shot from distance that dipped into the net at the last second.
The scoring for the Reign didn’t stop there.
In the 77th minute, Leroux was pounded to ground inside the box by Taryn Hemmings, giving the Reign a second penalty, taken once again by Little.
Little decided to switch up her technique, this time shooting toward the right side of the goal. LeBlanc guessed wrong, bringing Little to 11 goals this season.
The extremely physical match, which saw Reign captain Keelin Winters take a brutal elbow to the head, marked the first time this season that the Red Stars gave up more than one goal in a single game.
Next up, the Red Stars host Sky Blue FC next Sunday at home, while the Reign travel east for a two-game road trip against the Boston Breakers and Western New York Flash beginning on the 19th.
