Led by Amy Rodriguez, FC Kansas City defeated the Western New York Flash 1-0 to push the Flash winless streak to five games.
Rodriguez, who has had a career year in her return to professional soccer, added her ninth goal of the season before halftime to tie Seattle Reign FC midfielder Kim Little for the league lead.
Rodriguez scored the goal just before halftime connecting with Leigh Ann Robinson. The defender fed Rodriguez at the near post and the forward put a strike past Lydia Williams for the 1-0 advantage.
The Flash pushed for a late equalizer put couldn’t get past Nicole Barnhart, a role they’ve often found themselves in over the past month.
Western New York’s best opportunity came in the 88th minute when Carli Lloyd fired a strike in from 20-yards out but Barnhart was able to make the save.
Erika Tymrak almost put the Kansas City up by two in the 63rd minute as the midfielder dribbled past two defenders but Williams came up with a big save on the close range shot.
Part of the reason Western New York struggled offensively was due to Abby Wambach being out of the lineup. Wambach is currently nursing a LCL sprain suffered in last weekend’s 2-1 loss to Houston. She will likely be a game-time decision this weekend against Portland.
Notably FCKC defender Amy LePeilbet made her NWSL debut coming on as a late, second-half substitution. The USWNT defender hadn’t played in 18 months while recovering from a torn left ACL.
