For the second time this season, the Washington Spirit picked up three points when facing the Chicago Red Stars on the road.
After a scoreless first half, Spirit forward Jodie Taylor put away the game-winning goal in the 79th minute.
After receiving a ball from teammate Diana Matheson, Mexican international Veronica Perez took a shot from the left side of the field that Red Stars goalkeeper Karina LeBlanc was able to slap away. But with the ball slipping out of LeBlanc’s reach, Taylor was able to capitalize and easily slot the ball into the net.
The goal came after Spirit goalkeeper Ashlyn Harris had been tested many times on the other end of the field. Forward Adrianna Leon nailed a shot from the top of the box off the crossbar while Zakiya Bywaters had a second-half shot smothered by Hariris. With shots firing toward her, Harris kept her team out of any danger and earned her second clean sheet of the season.
Harris’ last clean sheet came on April 26 when the Spirit also earned a 1-0 victory in Chicago. Tonight’s goal was Taylor’s sixth of the season. The Spirit played the majority of the match without defender Crystal Dunn who came off the field after just 20 minutes of play. Dunn missed part of the preseason with an ankle injury but it was unclear if the previous injury played a role in the substitution.
Despite the match ending the Red Stars’ five-game winning streak, the team has yet to give up more than one goal in each of its 10 matches.
Next up, the Red Stars will head west to face the still-undefeated Seattle Reign on Saturday in the first of three clashes between the two teams this season.
The Spirit won’t play again until next Wednesday, when the team once again travels to Boston to face the struggling Breakers. The two teams faced off on Sunday, where the Spirit claimed all three points in a 3-2 victory.
