National Women's Soccer League / Seattle Reign FC / Western New York Flash

Failure to close out both halves punishes Flash… twice

Game of Week Recap

Had the clock run out just one minute earlier, the Western New York Flash would have handed the Seattle Reign their first loss of the season. But a 90+ minute goal from none other than Kim Little kept the Reign’s undefeated streak alive.

With the Reign failing to find a rhythm early in the match, the visitors struck first. In the 17th minute, a poor clearance from defender Kendall Fletcher went straight to Abby Wambach. Wambach immediately pounced on the ball and struck an easy ball past Hope Solo to give the Flash the lead.

As the Reign began to put more pressure on the Flash, the clock began winding down. Right when it looked like the Flash would head into halftime with a one-goal lead, Stephanie Cox sent a cross into the box, connecting with Jess Fishlock, who calmly put the ball into the net.

The second half was eerily like the first, in terms of the timing of the goals.

In the 61st minute, Wambach used her head to flick the ball to teammate Carli Lloyd. Lloyd, in turn, headed the ball toward the goal and earned her second goal of the season.

Some tactical changes by Reign head coach Laura Harvey saw the team constantly pushing for a late equalizer. After 90 minutes, the Flash were clinging on to the 2-1 lead until late in stoppage time when Little equalized from the top of the 18.

Moments later, the final whistle blew. With the Flash giving up late goals in both halves, the team was forced to share points with the still-undefeated Reign.

Player of the Match: It’s been said many times this season, but Kim Little has, once again, come through to help the Reign keep an impressive streak alive. The midfielder came up big when needed most and helped her team come away with a much-needed point after it looked like the team would suffer its first loss.
