Sky Blue FC surrenders two-goal lead against Spirit

Sky Blue at Wash

For the second time this season, Sky Blue FC found itself watching the referee point to the penalty spot in stoppage time.

This time, the New Jersey club was whistled for the handball in the waning moments of the game. Sky Blue FC could only watch as a two-goal lead was erased after midfielder Diana Matheson converted the kick for her fourth goal of the season to tie the match, 3-3.

The ball was served into the box by a Spirit defender and Sky Blue FC defender Kendall Johnson was whistled for the foul. Mathson, who scored four times from the spot last season, placed her right-footed shot past Sky Blue FC goalkeeper Jill Loyden.

Sky Blue FC went into the halftime break trailing 1-0 but scored three-straight goals in the first 20 minutes of the second half to take a 3-1 lead.

Kelley O’Hara transitioned into an attacking role after spending six of the first seven matches of the season on the backline and threaded a pass in the 47th minute for a streaking Jonelle Filigno. The Canadian forward touched the ball around Ashlyn Harris and finished a sliding shot into the back of the net to level the score at one apiece.

Less than five minutes later, Washington defender Crystal Dunn fouled Sky Blue FC’s Katy Freels on the left side of the box. Freels curled her free kick around the wall and into the far post to put the visitors up 2-1 in the 52nd minute.

O’Hara gave her club a two-goal lead in the 65th minute on a counter attack. Defender Christie Rampone found space on the right flank and played a cross into the box where both Ocampo and O’Hara were making runs. O’Hara managed to chest the ball down and past Harris for Sky Blue FC’s third goal of the match.

The Spirit cut the lead in half in the 74th minute after Lori Lindsey won a challenge and launched a shot from 25 yards out. The ball deflected off a Sky Blue FC defender and off Loyden’s hands before bouncing off the post and into the back of the net.

The visitors had a chance to create a two-goal deficit in the 86th minute off the foot of Ocampo. The Mexican forward found herself with time and space on the right side of the box and nailed a shot on goal that forced Harris to make a sliding stop. Ocampo’s rebound attempt sailed just over the goal as it skimmed off the top of the crossbar.

Washington took a lead just before halftime after a good build up on the right side of the field. Ali Kriger won a 50-50 challenge deep her club’s attacking third and played the ball back to Yael Averbuch. Averbuch played a square pass to Veronica Perez who found Dunn at the top of the box. After shaking her defender, Dunn slipped a pass to Robyn Gayle. Gayle took several touches toward the penalty shot before firing a low, hard shot that slipped past Loyden.
