Michelle Wenino nailed a shot off the crossbar in the 52nd minute but was able to knock home the rebound for the game winner as the Chicago Red Stars defeated the Boston Breakers, 3-1, in the first of two matches the clubs will play this week.
Jen Hoy, who scored the game winner Sunday against the Houston Dash, added a 67th minute score to cement Chicago’s victory. The forward lobbed a shot over Alyssa Naeher after being sprung free by a Samantha Johnson through ball.
Despite the lopsided outcome, Boston held a lead for the majority of the first half after Breakers defender Courtney Jones opened the scoring in the 19th minute. LeBlanc blocked Heather O’Reilly’s strike from beyond distance but Jones was able to place home the easy rebound for her first goal of the season.
Just before halftime, Red Stars captain Lori Chalupny tied the game up 1-1. Hoy swung a cross in to Adrianna Leon at the far post and the forward headed the ball to an open Chalupny who placed a header past Naeher. Red Stars Michelle Wenino added the game winning goal in the 52nd minute.
The loss marks Boston’s league leading forth of the season and sees the club remain in last place, while the win sees Chicago level on points with FC Kansas City and Western New York Flash. Both teams will matchup again Sunday at Harvard Stadium.
