Rodriguez lifts Blues past Spirit

Wash at KC

A pair of goals from FC Kansas City forward Amy Rodriguez earned the home team three points against the Washington Spirit and kept the team’s undefeated streak at home alive.

The match took a slow start, but Rodriguez first broke deadlock 35 minutes in. Receiving the ball at the top of the box, Rodriguez dribbled around her defender and blasted a left-footed shot into the back of the net.

Less than 20 minutes into the second half, the Spirit’s Danesha Adams unleashed a shot from distance that took a last-second dip into the back of the net, leveling the score.

Not to be upstaged, Rodriguez netted in her second goal of the game just one minute after restarting play. After the Blues dispossessed the visitors, Lauren Holiday sent a lateral pass at the top of the 18, with Rodriguez pointing to where she wanted the ball.

Rodriguez made no mistake, scoring a one-touch left-footer that slid just past an outstretched Ashlyn Harris, sealing the win for FC Kansas City.

The Blues are now 3-3-1 overall (2-0-1 at home) and Rodriguez has bypassed Seattle’s Kim Little to take to the top of the goal-scoring leaderboard, with six goals.

Next up, the Blues head westward, where they’ll face the 6-0-0 Seattle Reign on Wednesday night. The Reign have yet to concede a goal in open play and the Blues will be looking to break that stat.

Four days after that, the team will head back to Kansas City, where the team will host the Houston Dash and Seattle Reign on May 18 and 21 respectively.

The Spirit will have some time to rest and recover before playing their next three matches at home where they’ll host the Western New York Flash (May 17), Sky Blue FC (May 21) and Houston Dash (May 26).
