It took Abby Wambach three halves into her NWSL season to find the back of the net but when she did, she carried the Flash with a pair of goals to defeat Sky Blue 2-0 at Sahlen Stadium.
The U.S. international missed Western New York’s first two matches of the season with a fractured orbital bone suffered in the April 10 game against China. Wambach’s first goal of the season came in the 49th minute as she put home one of her signature headers off Vicky Losada’s free kick.
She finished the brace in extra time after being sprung free from goalkeeper Kelsey Wys drop kick. Wambach out ran defender Ashley Nick to the ball and chipped in a finish past Brittany Cameron.
There were scary moments for both side in the 60th minute as Sonia Bermudez and Taylor Lytle collided both stayed down on the field for several moments. Lytle took the worst of the collision as she was carried off the field and Maya Hayes came on in her place.
Western New York dominated the game’s attack as Sky Blue FC couldn’t keep up with their pace on the ball. The Flash out shot Sky Blue, 8-2.
The loss marks Sky Blue’s third of the season and the club has only registered one victory in 2014. Rookie keeper Wys recorded a shutout and an assist in her professional debut.
