Naho Kawasumi notched her first NWSL goal midway through the first half to put the Seattle Reign on top and forward Beverly Goebel added to the lead minutes into the first half as Seattle won its fourth-straight match 2-0.
Sophie Schmidt had an opportunity to get one back for the home side in the 86th minute when a Reign defender fell on the ball and was called for an inadvertent handball. Schmidt stepped up to take the kick but for the second-straight home match, Sky Blue FC was unable to convert a late kick from the spot as Hope Solo slid to her right to make the stop.
The Reign struck first after Sky Blue FC defender Kelley O’Hara played a pass back to goalkeeper Jill Loyden. The ball pinged off Loyden’s leg and squirted to Kawasumi whose first shot was blocked by Loyden but followed up to knock home the rebound in the 24th minute.
The slick conditions did not appear to play as big a role prior to the Reign getting on the board but Seattle appeared to adjust to the conditions quicker than the home side.
Goebel picked up her first goal of the season in the 50th minute after a build up on the right side. Kim Little played Kawasumi down the right flank and the Japanese forward slid her pass across the box. The ball beat Loyden and Goebel slipped behind her defender to tap the ball into an empty net.
Seattle looked to get on the board in the 13th minute when Goebel put a pass across the six yard box that defender Caitlin Foord made a sliding clear on before it could make it to its target.
Sky Blue FC got its first dangerous offensive opportunity in the 51st minute. Nanase Kiryu got a shot off just outside the six-yard box that forced Solo into a diving stop to preserve the shutout.
Schmidt had several chances to from long range, including one in the 83rd minute that sailed just over the net.
Seattle improves to 4-0-0 on the season while Sky Blue FC stays near the bottom of the table—and winless—at 0-2-2. Both teams will be back in action Saturday as Sky Blue FC hosts the Boston Breakers and Seattle Reign will travel to Washington.
