NWSL suspends Flash’s Carli Lloyd

The NWSL Disciplinary Committee announced Monday that it has suspended Western New York Flash midfielder Carli Lloyd two matches for use of “excessive force” during the Flash’s 1-0 loss on April 19 to the Chicago Red Stars.

The incident occurred in stoppage time of the first half between Lloyd and Red Stars rookie Vanessa DiBernardo. Lloyd was given a yellow card for this foul:

Lloyd will miss the next two matches that she is available to play in, beginning this weekend against the Portland Thorns in a rematch of last season’s championship match.

The U.S. midfielder gave the following statement:

“My action in the game against the Chicago Red Stars was not acceptable and is inexcusable. I am very disappointed in myself and this is a lesson I will learn from. I want to apologize to Vanessa, the Red Stars, my teammates, the WNY Flash organization and the NWSL fans.”
