Just three days after suffering a 3-1 defeat against the Seattle Reign, the Washington Spirit picked up three points in a 1-0 win over the Chicago Red Stars at Benedictine University’s Sports Complex Stadium in Lisle, Ill.
After a goalless first half, defender Tori Huster scored the lone goal of the match five minutes into the second half.
Following a Spirit corner that was cleared by the Red Stars, the visitors regained possession almost immediately and a cross from Danesha Adams on the left side of the field was whipped into the box where Huster headed the ball past Red Stars goalkeeper Karina LeBlanc.
The win gives the Spirit (now 2-2-0) a total of six points in four matches and puts the team in second place on the leaderboard—at least for a few hours.
Goalkeeper Ashlyn Harris also earned her first shutout of the 2014 season. Harris’ first shutout of the 2013 season was also against the Red Stars, but it took the Spirit 20 matches to achieve the feat.
The Red Stars (now 1-1-0) have picked up three points in two matches and are currently in sixth place on the leaderboard.
Next up, the Spirit face a rematch against the Seattle Reign on May 3 at the Maryland SoccerPlex.
The Red Stars will hit the road for the first time on Wednesday in a match against FC Kansas City at the Verizon Wireless Field at Durwood Stadium in Kansas City, Mo.
