In the club’s first-ever victory, the Houston Dash defeated the Boston Breakers, 3-2, in front of 2,018 supporters at Harvard Stadium in Allston, Mass.
Second half substitute Teresa Noyola swung the match’s momentum scoring an 81st minute equalizer. Rookie midfielder Rafaelle Souza dribbled around three Breakers defenders and laid off the ball to Noyola at the top of the box who blasted a strike to the top left corner.
Four minutes later, Breakers defender Courtney Jones fouled Souza inside the box resulting in a Dash penalty kick. Noyola stepped up to the spot and calmly placed her strike to the left as Breakers keeper Alyssa Naeher dove right for the 3-2 advantage.
Not lost in the Breakers’ defeat was the impressive play of Heather O’ Reilly who played a role in both of Boston’s goals.
Quick was the operative word to describe the O’Reilly’s opening goal. Fifty-five seconds into the match, Lisa De Vanna fed a through ball to O’Reilly at the top of the box and after the midfielder’s initial strike was denied by McLeod she buried home the rebound.
O’Reilly swung in a beautiful left-footed cross towards Joanna Lohman who nodded the ball past Dash keeper Erin McLeod in the 70th minute to give the Breakers a 2-1 lead.
Forward Ella Masar scored the first goal in Dash history in the 50th minute when she put home a rebound off a Tiffany McCarty strike past Erin McCleod.
Jones looked notably out of position on Masar’s goal, leaving the forward unmarked for an easy rebound goal. Jones, who was featured as a forward for FC Kansas City last season, is transitioning to the center back position for the Breakers after the departure of Kia McNeil.
Jones has accounted for two penalty kicks in two starts this season.
The loss marks Boston’s second of the season and sees the club fall to last in the league standings. Both clubs will take the field on April 27 when the Breakers host Sky Blue FC and the Dash are on the road for their second-straight match when they head to Seattle.
Woman of the Match: Teresa Noyola made an huge impact off the bench as she netted the equalizer for the Dash in the 81st minute and put home the game winner from the spot in the 85th minute.
