The Chicago Red Stars announced Friday that the club has added midfielder/defender Julie Johnston, midfielder Vanessa DiBernardo and forward Hayley Brock to their roster.
Johnston was selected third overall in January’s draft. The Santa Clara product led the Broncos in assists (8) and game-winning goals (4) during the 2013 season. She earned WCC Player of the Year honors as well as being named a First Team All-American.
Johnston captained the 2012 U.S. U-20 women’s national team to a world championship win and was named the Bronze Ball winner as the tournament’s third-best player. She made her first senior team appearance on Feb. 9, 2013 against Scotland.
DiBernardo was selected as the fourth overall pick. The forward helped Illinois reach the Sweet Sixteen in her senior season. She set the Fighting Illini record for career assists (22) and tied the program record for shots (325).
The Naperville, Ill., native led the Illini in scoring in 2010-2012 and was second in her senior season with seven goals. She is currently a member of the U.S. U-23 women’s national team.
Brock has been a member of the U.S. U-18 national team player pool and was also a member of the 2008 U.S. U-17 World Cup roster that finished second.
She led the University of Maryland in scoring her sophomore, junior and senior seasons after transferring from Penn State. Brock finished her Maryland career with 32 goals and 16 assists for 80 points in 62 games played.
