Canada scoreless in draw to Mexico

Canada played Mexico to a scoreless draw in front of 21,217 supporters at BC Place in Vancouver, British Columbia last Sunday.

Throughout the course of the match, Canada made numerous attempts to pull ahead. However, Mexican goalkeeper Cecilia Santiago looked sharp in goal and kept Canada off the board.

In the 13th minute, Canada found the back of the net scored by Brittany Baxter but it was called back for offside.

Two minutes later, Mexican forward Teresa Worbis stepped around a Canadian defender and fired a shot on target, forcing keeper Erin McLeod to make a save.

Canada had another chance to grab the lead in the 48th minute. From inside the 18-yard box, Sophie Schmidt sliced a cross from Brittany Baxter over the Mexican goal.

In the 54th minute, Christine Sinclair played a through ball in to Kaylyn Kyle for a 1v1 opportunity, only to have Santiago make a diving stop.

Santiago came up huge again, this time on Sinclair, in the 78th minute. Santiago denied the Canadian forward her chance for a late game-winning goal.

Canada’s next game is Jan. 31 against the U.S. in Frisco, Texas.
