After what has been an almost-silent offseason thus far, Sky Blue FC began teasing an announcement on Monday afternoon.
The New Jersey club named Tony Novo as its new GM/President Thursday morning, effective immediately. Novo was the NJ Ironmen indoor soccer team’s Vice President/GM from 2007-2010.
“I am excited to be joining the Sky Blue FC family,” said Novo. “I am looking forward to the growth of professional women’s soccer in the New Jersey market and the development of soccer in the U.S.”
Thomas Hofstetter, who has been listed as the team’s president and CEO, was just listed as the CEO in Thursday morning’s release.
“While we made the playoffs during the 2013 NWSL season, we want to return to winning championships, and we believe Tony is another important building block in pursuing this quest,” stated Hofstetter.
The announcement comes on the heels of a report late on Tuesday night announcing that negotiations between the NWSL side and MLS’s New York Red Bulls had broken down.
There has been no explanation from Sky Blue FC as of Thursday morning on what went wrong in the talks, which had support from NWSL, U.S. Soccer president Sunil Gulati, Red Bulls GM Jérôme de Bontin and Red Bulls ownership in Europe.
