The Portland Thorns announced on this week that they acquired and signed forward Tiffany Weimer and defender Casey Ramirez for the remainder of the 2013 season. The Thorns have waived defender Jazymyne Avant.
Weimer joins the Thorns from Danish side Fortuna Hjørring where she spent the 2012-2013 Danish Elitedisvisionen season. The 29-year-old scored a team high 11 goals on the season and helped her team to a second place finish and a Round of 16 finish in the UEFA Women’s Champions League.
Weimer has also played for the W-Leagues Vancouver Whitecaps (2011) and New England Mutiny (2012). She was drafted 17th overall by FC Gold Pride (WPS) in 2009 where she registered one goal and three assists in 15 matches. She was signed by the Boston Breakers in 2010 and played the first half of the WPS season before she left to play for AIK in the Swedish Damallsvenskan.
She has also played in Finland (Aland United) and Brazil (Santos FC) as well as in the WPSL at SoccerPlus Connecticut.
Ramirez also joins the Thorns from Fortuna Hjørring where she played her first season of professional soccer in the 2012-2013 Danish Elitedivisionen season. The 23-year-old finished her collegiate career at Syracuse in 2011 where she played in 75 matches for the Orange.
She has also played in the W-League for the Ottawa Fury from 2010-12 helping them to three division titles, a conference title and the 2012 W-League Championship.
Avant has been with the Thorns from the start of the season. She appeared in four matches, making two starts for the Thorns playing mostly in the left back position. She was signed as a Discovery Player on February 20.
