Sky Blue FC stayed at the top of the table on Sunday night with a 3-0 victory over Seattle Reign FC. Lisa De Vanna got the scoring started in the 9th minute and Sophie Schmidt and Taylor Lytle added second half tallies to improve Sky Blue FC to 5-1-1.
Caitlin Foord started took off down the right flank before cutting inside and splitting two Reign defenders with a pass at the top of the box for De Vanna who slotted her shot into the far post to give Sky Blue FC the 1-0 advantage.

Sky Blue continued to create chances with forward Kelley O’Hara looping a shot that Reign goalkeeper Haley Kopmeyer parried down before collecting it in the 17th minute. Kopmeyer made her professional debut after Michelle Betos started the first six matches.
De Vanna looked to get her second of the match when she got in behind Kaylyn Kyle but her left-footed shot slid across the goal mouth before rolling out of bounds.
Seattle came out of the halftime break looking to find an equalizer early in the second half when Christine Nairn curled a free kick in on goal in the 48th minute. Sky Blue FC goalkeeper Brittany Cameron made the save easily to keep the one goal advantage for the visitors.
Reign forward Tiffany Cameron got in behind the Sky Blue FC defense and collided with B. Cameron resulting in a foul and nullifying the opportunity to equalize the match.
The hour mark saw the match change drastically for the home side. Defender Jenny Ruiz took out De Vanna in the box, resulting in her second yellow card and a penalty kick for Sky Blue FC. Ruiz was booked in the 25th minute for tripping the Australian forward.
The ensuing penalty kick was taken by De Vanna but Kopmeyer dove to her right to corral the kick and left no rebound to keep her team within one.
The game got a bit chippy after following the penalty kick attempt and saw both De Vanna and Brittany Bock receive yellow cards for Sky Blue FC.
O’Hara was victim to a hard foul just outside of the box, setting up a free kick attempt from 20 yards out in the 79th minute. Sophie Schmidt stepped up and bent a left-footed shot around the wall and past a frozen Kopmeyer for the 2-0 lead. It was Schmidt’s fourth goal of the season which ties her for the league lead with Alex Morgan, Renae Cuellar, Sydney Leroux, and Diana Matheson.
Taylor Lytle added her second goal in as many games in the 86th minute when she collected a free kick and looped a shot over Kopmeyer from 10 yards out.
With the loss, the Reign fell for the sixth straight match and are still winless at 0-6-1.
Sky Blue FC returns to action on May 25 when they travel to Verizon Wireless Field to take on FC Kansas City at 7:35pm CT. Seattle will remain at home where they will host regional rival Portland Thorns FC on May 25 at 7pm PT.
- Seattle Reign FC backline: Elli Reed and Kate Deines are both out with ankle ligament strains and will miss 3-4 weeks of action. Reed suffered the ankle injury in practice last week and Deines went out early in Thursday’s match against the Spirit. Jenny Ruiz will also miss the Thorns match with the red card suspension. Kaylyn Kyle slid onto the backline to fill Deines role but it will be more musical chairs in the back for Laura Harvey this week as she tries to figure out who will play on the backline.
- Lisa De Vanna: De Vanna’s work ethic this season has been incredible. She caused fits for the Reign defense for the entire match.
- Sky Blue FC backline: Sunday’s match was the team’s third straight shutout. Goalkeeper Brittany Cameron leads the league in shutouts. The young backline of Kendall Johnson, Caitlin Foord and Coco Goodson is anchored by Christie Rampone. They have given up just 4 goals in 7 matches.
- Brittany Bock: After suffering a broken rib in the season opener against Western New York, Bock made her comeback, coming on as a substitute for Katy Freels in the 61st minute. Her comeback was short lived when she was forced to come out of the match nine minutes later after suffering an apparent arm injury. Sky Blue FC announced this afternoon that she was diagnosed with a broken left arm. There is no timetable for her return.
